Airlive FAQ
AirMax5
Q:

I need to install AirMax2/AirMax5 in the tower. How can I make the process easier?

A:

You should install the cable and close the AirMax first before bring the device to the tower.

Q:

Can I access the Telnet and SSH management from WAN side in WISP Router and AP Router modes?

A:

By default the SSH is always open in both LAN and WAN side, therefore you can access SSH directly.  For Telnet, both LAN and WAN access will be open once you enable it in "System Configuration -> System Management" menu.

Q:

My AP is set to "Hide SSID". When my AirMax5 connects to the AP, it drops connection sometimes.

A:

If you are living in Europe, please set the Regulatory Domain to "United Kingdom"

Q:

When I select 10MHz or 5MHz bandwidth, the available channels do not increase. Why?

A:

Please make sure the use of extra channels are allowed in your country before performing this procedure.  On the "Regulatory Domain", please select "Test Domain".  It will show all available channels

Q:

I can't seem to connect AirMax5 with Mikrotik's AP-Bridge mode using WEP encryption.

A:

It is recommended that you use WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK encryption for connecting with Mikrotik.  However; if you must use WEP, please choose "Static Keys Required" when you create the WEP security policy on the Mikrotik.

Q:

I can't find my remote AP when I do a site survey, why?

A:

Your AP has DFS control turn on by default for compliance with the law.  When you change wireless settings in AP or Gateway mode, the device will scan for radar signal first.  This process might take a few minutes.  Therefore, when your remote AP change settings, please wait for a few minutes before doing site survey to find it.

Q:

After I upgrade the firmware to 1.00e13F, my WDS site survey function doesn't seem to work?

A:

This might be caused by some settings from the previous firmware. Please restore the settings to default, then set up the device again.

Q:

I have an AP connecting to many wireless clients at different distance. How should I set the distance or ACKtimeout value?

A:

Using ACKtimeout for point-to-point connection is no problem.  However, for point to multi-point connection, it becomes a problem at the center point.  In the diagram below, the AP at point A is the center hub.  While wireless clients at B, C,and D can set correct ACKtimeout values to point A, the center AP can set only one Acktimeout value.

To illustrate this problem; when you set the ACKtimeout at Point A to 2km distance.  The likely result will be Point B will get about 90% of the bandwidth, Point C gets 10%, and Point D gets nothing at all.

To solve this problem, please use total bandwidth control at point B, C, D to limit the bandwidth to about 40% of total bandwidth each maximum. Then set the AP’s(Point A) ACKtimeout value to 3km distance (the furthest client from the AP).  All 3 points should then get acceptable share of the bandwidth.

Q:

I try to login AirMax5 using SSH/SSH2, but the default username/password doesn't work?

A:

The AirMax5's SSH/SSH2 has 2 level of login.
  • When prompt for "login as:", please enter "root".
  • When as for password, please do not input anything, just press the "Enter" key.
  • Then it will bring you to the "Wireless Router Manager Console", when asked for password, please enter "airlive".  When you change the password, this password will change also.

Q:

I am using the e12b or newer firmware. I heard the Bridge Infrastructor (WDS Station) mode can now connect with Mikrotik AP. How can I make it work?

A:

Please use AP-Bridge mode in Mikrotik and turn on the WDS Dynamic option. There is no need to enter MAC address, the AirMax5's Bridge Infrastructure mode can do site survey and connect with Mirktotik using WEP, WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK encryptions.

Q:

Why am I not getting good performance at indoor and short distance?

A:

AirMax5 is equipped with hi-power radio for long distance application.  If you are testing the AirMax5 at indoor distance, please reduce the TX output power to 14dBm.

Q:

How can I make connection with Mikrotik AP?

A:

Please check the configuration document and follow the steps to configure them.

Q:

What is the best TX output power setting for AirMax5

A:

The answer depends on the distance of the wireless connection.  Higher output power doesn't necessary equal to better performance.  Please use just enough output power to avoid inteference to others.  At less than 200meter distance, the best output power is about 14dBm.  At 2km distance; the best output power setting is 18dBm for “11a” and “Super-A without Turbo”, 24dBm for “Super-A with Static/Dynamic Turbo”.

Q:

When I use “Site Survey”, why does the RSSI LED goes off?

A:

When you click on the Site Survey, the AirMax5 thinks you are trying to choose a new network to associate. Therefore, it will disconnect from current connection and wait until you establish a new connection.

Q:

When do I use Per-User Bandwidth Control by IP, MAC, or IP segment?

A:

In general, IP address control limits the devices on the end node (i.e. PC and WISP router). MAC address control can limit the traffic of a AP/CPE in wireless client mode.

  • IP address: When you want to limit the bandwidth of a single notebook computer, PC, or WISP router.

  • MAC address: When you want to limit the bandwidth of a remote AP/CPE in Client mode.
For example, another AirMax5 in client mode.

  • IP Segment: When you want to limit the bandwidth of an entire IP range.
For example, all the PCs using the DHCP server to get IP addresses.
  • Q:

Where is the signal survey function that displays the RSSI value continuously?

    A:

The “Signal Survey” function is inside the Site Survey function. You can access from “Operation Mode -> Setup -> Site Survey” menu.

    Q:

Why can't I receive any signal from AirMax5’s built in antenna?

    A:

The AirMax5’s built-in antenna is a patch antenna that send and receive signal in the forward direction of the CPE with 30 degree angle vertically and horizontally. Please see diagram below:

Please also make sure the antenna (Operation Mode->Setup->Advance Settings) is not set to use external antenna.

    Q:

I tried the Emergency Upgrade procedure. But it doesn’t work, why?

    A:

Please make sure the firmware file is renamed to “zImagewithout any file extension. The file name has to match exactly with the big capital “I”.

    Q:

When I use an external antenna, how much distance can the AirMax5 reach?

    A:

The distance of a wireless connection depends on many factors such as cable loss and weather conditions. There is an online distance calculator at the AirLive website. The distance calculated is not a guaranteed value; it is for your reference only. If you agree with this limitation, please visit
    http://www.airlive.com/support/wireless_distance_calculator.jsp

    Q:

When I plug in the POE cable and power adapter, the AirMax5’s power LED is not on?

    A:

Please make sure you have connected the PoE cable to the correct port on the DC injector. Moreover, you should use an Ethernet cable with 4 twisted pairs (CAT5 or better) for POE cable.

    Q:

Where can I purchase the optional metal Mounting Kit?

    A:

The part number for the mounting kit is “WMK-AIRMAX”. Please ask your authorized AirLive distributor for availability.

    Q:

I heard AirMax5 can limit the bandwidth of BitTorrent and eDonkey traffic. But I don’t see the option on the Bandwidth Control.

    A:

The option to limit bandwidth by application or port is available only on WISP router and AP Router modes.

    Q:

When I try to configure AirMax5, the following message pop-up saying there is already someone login in to the AirMax5.

    Another user is already logged
    on (IP address:192.168.1.50 ),
    Try logging on later.

    A:

AirMax5 currently only allow one user to manage the device at a time. Therefore, it will reject another IP logging in until the current administrator logout. If you need to force another administrator to logout, please type “login.asp” on your browser. Then enter password again to enter the management interface.

    Q:

My browser can’t remember my password.

    A:

Please use Mozilla Firefox to manage the AirMax5. It will prompt you whether to remember the username/password.

    Q:

I forgot my password or the IP address of AirMax5.

    A:

Please restore your settings to default by press the reset button for more than 5 seconds. You should be able to find your AirMax5 at 192.168.1.1 with password “airlive”.
